Senior Illustrator at University of Manchester 2005-2008

 

For three years I worked at The University of Manchester as a Senior Illustrator for the William Lee Innovation Centre. I was responsible for creating all the illustrations for the K4I (Knowledge for Innovation) project, which is a web portal designed to provide educational and scientific content for small to medium businesses based in the knitting and textiles industry.

The work I generated for the university consisted of vast numbers of technical drawings, illustrations and models, as well as animations and interactive illustrations.

Since working for the University of Manchester I have also created visualisations for Centre for Materials Research and Innovation, (CMRI) at the University of Bolton from 2008 to 2010.

 

 

Environmental Art 1996-2010

 

I am a designer/visualiser for Partnership Art and Eaton Waygood Associates, generating concepts and artwork for proposed art installations. The type of work I have created for these companies ranges from concept design and development to visualisation. The final stage involves modelling and rendering in 3D programs, then compositing model elements against photographic backgrounds, mostly in Photoshop. Work includes:

2004: Design and visuals for “The Spirit of Sport” Reebok Stadium, Bolton and the Scarborough Wave.

 

2005: Artwork proposals for Aberafan sea front and Belfast Broadway development scheme.

 

2008: Visualisations of public art proposals for Broadway Malyam’s Stockport Metro re-development.

 

2009: Proposal visualisation for Salisbury city centre street furniture.

I’ve worked for design agencies in Greater Manchester generating digital illustrations employing mostly Photoshop, Illustrator and 3D. Projects include:

 

 

2002-2003: Visualisation for “Derek Bradshaw, Son of Satan” an animation proposal for network television.

 

2003: Images for Madhouse’s Toyota Germany Ad. campaign.

 

2003-2005: Publicity illustrations for North Trafford College’s recruitment and publicity campaign.

 

2005-2006: Salford Hospital Trust publicity artwork for Cranbourne Associates.

 

2006: Ford Fusion U.S. Campaign publicity images. Illustrations for Plasir du chocolat and designs for “Snot Rags” brand, as well as Microscopic Worlds, a series of illustrations for Holden and Friends Design Agency.

 

2008-2010: Visualisations and CAD construction patterns for a range of huge inflatables for SpaceCadets.

 

2014: Illustrator and Visualiser for Jersey Girls Interactive, New Jersey.

Theatre Work

 

During my time as a set designer and painter I work for both large and small theatres. My work consisted of working with directors to design stages to constructing and painting sets.

 

1987: Designer of sets and costumes for The New Word Dance Company Theatr Clwyd.

 

1987-89: Resident designer and set painter for Theatr Clwyd Outreach Theatre Company.

 

1989: Designer for Manchester Actors Company’s production of “Look out! Here comes Eric Bradshaw”.

 

1991: Designer and painter for Julie Jones’ production of her play, “Dreams of Dead Women”.

 

1992: Designer and set builder/painter for Raw Material’s production of “The Tempest”.

 

1994-95: Resident designer and set painter for Expressions Theatre in a number of Children’s theatre productions that ran in venues all over  the country culminating in the Haymarket Theatre in the West End.

 

 

 

 

Software Proficiency

 

 

Adobe Photoshop versions 3 to CS6

 

I have deep knowledge of Photoshop through my extensive industry experience, and have taught the program to Level 2 and 3 in further education, as well running specialist and night classes.

 

Adobe Illustrator versions 7 to CS6

 

I am almost equally knowledgeable of Illustrator through my extensive industry experience, and have taught the program to Level 2 and 3 in further education.

 

Corel Painter versions 3 to 12

 

I have used Painter for 10 years, and have an in-depth knowledge of the program.

 

Adobe InDesign versions CS3 to CS6

 

I have worked with Indesign for 4 years. I am reasonably adept at formatting and layout, and can produce documents at a professional level.

 

Quark Xpress versions 4 to 6.5

 

I have used Quark Xpress for about 6 years and, like Indesign, I can create richly designed formatted documents for print.

 

Adobe Flash versions 8 to CS5

 

I used the program extensively whilst at the University of Manchester, and have a basic knowledge of Actionscript.

 

Adobe Dreamweaver versions CS4 to CS5

 

I have only used the program for a few months, but have taught it to a Level 2 web authoring class.

 

Rhino 3D versions 1 to 4

 

I have been working with Rhino for 10 years, and it has become the default modelling program for my 3D visualisation work.

 

Bryce 3D versions 2 to 7

 

This is a landscape generating program, and I have used it for the past 10 years. I have taught this as an introduction to 3D at Level 2 in further education. I have also used other landscape tools: Vue and Terragen.

 

Silo versions 1 to 2

 

This is a 3D sub-division surface modeler, and I model most organic subjects with it. For the past 4 years I have use the program in conjunction with my 3DS Max workflow.

 

3DS Max versions 5 to 2012

 

I have been generating models and animations with this program for about 4 to 5 years. I used the program whilst a visualiser at the University of Manchester, and have taught it as an introduction to 3D at Level 4.

 

Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 to 2010

 

I have prepared presentation documentation for the University of Manchester, my Public Arts projects, and for teaching in Further Education. As well as using its native tools I import composed and manipulated imagery from Photoshop and Illustrator into it, as well as well as a multitude of movie formats, Flash animation and 3D PDFs using Acrobat Professional.
